Irrawaddy Dolphins can be found in the Irrawaddy River, cooperatively fishing together with the local fishermen.
However, due to the large amount of tourists seeking out for and pursuing the dolphins by boats as a part of the “dolphin watching tours” in the Irrawaddy River, the dolphins are being scared away and are endangered. This has also caused negative effects for the local communities who have traditionally fished together with dolphins and are not gaining anything from these “dolphin watching tours”.
Due to the negative effects and the criticisms from the conservationists, a new approach has been put into practice by a community-based project centered in two villages, Myitkangyi and Hsithe in order to support the local communities, to prevent the negative effects and to raise awareness for the protection of the dolphins as there are less than 70 of them left in the Irrawaddy River.
This video will tell you a lot more about Irrawaddy dolphin-watching tours.
