info The Botahtaung Pagoda (ဗိုလ်တထောင်ဘုရား) is located on the Botahtaung Paya Road.

Situated beside the Yangon River, the Botahtaung Pagoda means literally the Pagoda of the thousand military leaders and they were the ones who escorted the eight hair relics of the Gautama Buddha, brought from India over 2000 years ago. The pagoda is believed to be built by Mon people around the same time Shwedagon Pagoda was built over 2500 years ago. The Botahtaung Pagoda is a famous landmark on Yangon's waterfront. The pagoda is hollow inside, housing one of the eight sacred hair relics of Gautama Buddha. During the World War II in 1943, the pagoda was completely destroyed due to the bombing and it was rebuilt soon after the war ended in 1948 when Myanmar gained independence.
