Secretariat Building or Ministers' BuildingSecretariat Building or Ministers' Building

info The Ministers' Building (the Ministers' Office); formerly The Secretariat or Secretariat Building (ဝန်ကြီးများရုံး) occupies an entire city block, bounded by Anawrahta Road to the north, Theinbyu Road to the east, Maha Bandoola Road to the south and Bo Aung Kyaw Street to the west in downtown Yangon.

It was the home and administrative seat of British Burma and built in the late 1800s and was completed in 1902 for the central building and in 1905 for the remaining structures. The structure is more than 120 years old. It was where General Aung San, 7 cabinet ministers and a bodyguard were assassinated on 19 July 1947. The building is built in a Victorian-style with red and yellow bricks and it is currently on Yangon Heritage List.

The building became vacant later after 2005 as the government moved to the new capital city which is Naypyitaw. In 2011, it was decided to convert the building into a museum and in February 2012, the seven local companies and three foreign companies proposed to turn the building into a Martyr's Museum under the guidance of Yangon Heritage Trust. The room where the assassination took place was converted into a Buddhist shrine until 2016.

On July 19th of 2017, as the 70th anniversary of Martyr's Day, the building was first opened to the public with the original furnitures placed in their original positions in the room where the assassination took place. It was visited by an overwhelming number of locals and foreigners on the day.

The building is currently being restored and it can be visited through guided tours of the restoration project or through an exhibition area near it that showcases a variety of art works under the theme "Seven Decades".
