Martyrs' Mausoleum

info The Martyrs' Mausoleum (အာဇာနည်ဗိမာန်) is a memorable place of Myanmar National Leaders. 

It represents the constant reminder of great Myanmar National Leader, General Aung San and his fellow cabinet members who are also the independence leaders, who were assassinated on July 19, 1947 at around 10:37 a.m. On 19th July of 1947, at 10:37 a.m., some of Burma's independence leaders were assassinated by Galon U Saw, the leader of a rival political group, while they were holding a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat in downtown Rangoon. Galon U Saw, together with the perpetrators, were later tried and convicted by a special tribunal. 

The independence leaders that were assassinated are:

General Aung San, Prime Minister

Ba Cho, Minister of Information

Mahn Ba Khaing, Minister of Industry and Labor

Ba Win, Minister of Trade

Thakin Mya, Minister Without Portfolio, unofficially considered as Deputy Prime Minister of Burma

Abdul Razak, Minister of Education and National Planning

Sao San Tun, Minister of Hills Regions

Ohn Maung, Secretary of State Transport

Ko Htwe, Razak's bodyguard

The remains of General Aung San, Thakin Mya, Ba Cho, Ba Win, Mahn Ba Khaing and Ohn Maung were contained in the Mausoleum. Sao San Tun was cremated in Mongpawn which is his hometown with his ashes interred there and at the Martyrs' Mausoleum. Abdul Razak and Ko Htwe were buried in a Muslim cemetery in Tamwe Township.

On the 9th of October 1983, the mausoleum was destroyed by a bomb planted by North Korean agents, in attempt to assassinate Chun Doo-hwan, the fifth President of South Korea. The mausoleum was soon reconstructed in 1985 under the military dictatorship of General Ne Win. After the uprising in 1988, the ceremony was downgraded and the mausoleum became off-limits to ordinary people until 2011. Only starting from 2011 were the public allowed to pay their respects at the mausoleum on Martyrs’ Day.

It is required for high-ranking government officials to visit the mausoleum on July 19th to pay their respects to the Martyrs, and July 19th was designated as Martyrs' Day, a public holiday.

The mausoleum was renovated in 2016 for the Martyrs' Day to be first celebrated by a government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
