Maha Pasana Cave
info Maha Pasana Cave (မဟာပါသာဏလှိုင်ဂူသိမ်တော်ကြီး) is a huge man-made cave, 455ft (139m) in length, 375ft (114m) wide.
The Sixth Buddhist Synod was held in this cave which coincided with the 2500th Anniversary of Buddha’s Enlightenment which was held in the cave with the same name in India, which this cave is a replica of. It was built for holding International Buddhist Councils and other occasional special Buddhist ceremonies. It is also an examination and convocation hall for the Buddhist Monks who are taking Buddhism exams. The cave was built in 1952 and completed in 1954 to hold the Sixth Buddhist Synod, where over 2,500 monks gathered to recite the entire Tripitaka, the words of Buddha in Pali. The cave is still used to hold occasional Buddhist ceremonies and can accomodate up to 10,000 people. The six giant pillars inside the cave and the six entrances, which marks the Sixth Buddhist Synod are decorated with Burmese jade and the ceilings and walls are covered with teachings of the Tripitaka.
