info It is one of the best known towns in Mon State. lt is said that it was once an insignificant village peopled by the Lawa. Later, Mon and Pa O came to settle and maritime intercourse with south Indian states brought about its development into a thriving city. However, there is another contention that it was the first city to be founded by the Mon people. Whatever it may have been, it served as the royal capital for a dynasty of 59 Mon kings.

The Thaton hill with the Myathabeik pagoda and the Lawa Taung pagoda adorning its crests forms a backdrop for the town of Thaton which faces the Gulf of Martaban. The town being just about 16 miles from the sea, cooling sea breezes temperate the effect of day temperatures zooming up to around 95°F.

Thaton and its environs support a multi-ethnic community of Bamar, Mon, Kayin and Pa O people. Moreover, it was from here that the enduring spread of Theravada Buddhism in this country has been recorded and religious monuments in this area hark back to ancient times just as the town of today stands on the site of ancient Thaton itself.

Shwezayan Pagoda

This pagoda is often called Thaton Shwezayan to differentiate it from another Shwezayan between Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin. The pagoda as it stands today has a height of 360 feet from plinth to the finial and by its configuration seems to be quite modern, but a number of stone inscriptions, of which 5 display Old Mon writing, attest to its antiquity. The festival for this Pagoda is held on the 8th waxing day of the month of Dabaung which roughly corresponds to March.
